An absolute read for any woman who is or is thinking about running distances that most people would think are crazy. I just finished this book last night. Oh my word! So many questions I've had were answered. Plus it hosts a delightful insight to other distances females minds. I've had so many questions and frankly have been a little scared to ask my other running friends because they see my desire, no my need to run long distances as a little freaky. They like the shorter, bling filled hoo-rah races that are short and stick to paved roads. The dirt trails winding through hills and mountains call my name. So my questions have stayed in my mind, waiting for a day to ask someone else who "gets my need" to run like this, until now. This book helped open up the dialogue and let me know it is okay to have certain doubts and thoughts, without seeming like I'm strange. This book is raw and open, and will have you begging for more! It is not a book that you will be able to put down in hopes of finishing it a bit here and there, no it will have you reading all night long like I did, just so you can absorb all the information and stories. This is what I love about this book....it is filled with others stories and experiences, which are what we need. We shouldn't be afraid to share with other female distance runners. I know without a doubt that you will appreciate the hard work Vanessa put into making this book as I am sure it will sing to your inner daughter of distance soul.Product details

Daughters of Distance Stories of Women in Endurance Sports eBook Vanessa Runs Reviews
Very good book. At first I thought it was going to be a "man-hater" book, but the more I read the less it seemed that way and was more informative. I am not a long distance runner, but I felt interested in exploring long-distance running after I read it. I also appreciated the websites incorporated into the text. I have looked at many of them and have found helpful information.
This book explored so many issues that women face just for being women. Yes it discusses endurance races and gives unique perspectives for runners, but I think all women AND men should read this book. Right now I am debating whether to go for a morning run. It will still be dark out and I am concerned for my safety even though I live in an ideal family-friendly neighborhood. Should I dress like a man just in case? Tuck my hair into a hat, bring a pocket knife, etc.? Mothers, daughters, girlfriends, sisters, aunts, and nieces often have to make these considerations because rape is a reality. My husband is 6'3" and 210 lbs. He does not worry about being attacked when he heads out for a run. He has that luxury. This and other topics including self talk, how women treat each other, and even the effects of menopause on endurance runners are discussed. Read it!
I related to this book on so many levels. I am a runner, though not an ultra-runner, and so I related to it as an athlete. But, I related to it even more just as a woman, and I think someone who practices any sport, or educators who work with kids, or parents, or people who care about women's rights and issues would find a lot in this book to make them think. I especially appreciated how Vanessa didn't shy away from the complexity of the issues. For example, to one woman, running in pink can be a statement of empowerment, and we should embrace that, but, at the same time, have to remember to equally embrace the woman who does not want to present in a traditionally female way. Thank you for the great book, Vanessa! Not only was there a lot of food for thought, but it also made me want to get out for a run!
From the point of view of a male trail and ultra runner this was a great read. I also think it's an important read for men. I came away from the book with a better understanding of the issues and problems facing women in trail and ultra running. I think it will make me a better runner, a better man and a better person.
Aside from the content, Vanessa is an amazing and talented writer. My chief complaint is that she doesn't write more )
I purchased this book as a fan of Vanessa's blog and ultrarunning, so appreciation of the book was almost a gimme. I'm not sure if I was expecting was hard hitting journalism and research. Daughters of Distance opens with a harrowing and horrifying anecdote from women's running editor. The book then multitasks in different directions (funny, serious, maternal, gritty), just like a woman's life does. This book ultimately is gloriously positive, just like the sport itself. It helped me better understand and clarify some of my own views about gender in sports. But it warns that it only aims to start the conversation, not be the final word. I loved and highly recommend this book!
As a life long runner, I enjoyed this book. At times I found it to be slightly cliche/cheesy, however, I enjoyed the majority of the stories and content. I found it interesting that a LARGE portion of her research was conducted via social media. Having a work background in qualitative research, this initially made me cringe when I realized this but when I settled in to the book and took it for what it was (i.e. An enjoyable piece of non-fiction and Not an academic journal) I got over myself and appreciated Vanessa's passion and effort.
I almost cried when I finished reading this book; I didn't want the connection to end. Vanessa has tapped into the very spirit of women in endurance sports. I actually sat with highlighter in hand, marking pages, quotes, and pure inspiration that I will come back to again, and again. There is something for everyone in this amazing text; poetry, short stories, facts and figures, advice, testimonials, etc. This book has gone to the very heart of what makes women in sports work, and how all women can, and must persevere, just as in our sports, to be kind to one another, and pursue the fight towards not just equality, but independence. Touching does not begin to describe.... A MUST READ!
